1973 Chilean coup d'état
11 September, 1973, the democratically elected government of President Salvador Allende was overthrown by the Chilean military in a coup d’état.
In September 1970, President Nixon found that a goverment led by Allende in Chile would not be acceptable and authorized $10 million to stop Allende from coming to power or unseat him. As part of the Track II initiative, the CIA tried to convince key Chilean military officers to carry out a coup.
